Day 1 – Fit to Bursting in Johannesburg
October 11, 2011
Lovely smooth plane journey (no clutching at window frames in a “we’re all going to die in this turbulance” moment ) and yes Ben got free food and alcohol (he was soo happy). Touch down in Jo’berg (as we locals call it) 30 minutes early, result. There it was printed on a sign in green capitals BEN SHAW, the moment we realised all is good. The taxi driver was a lovely chap and had an awesome accent. The sun was shinning, we hadn’t lost our baggage and the jet lag wasn’t bad (we are only 1 hour ahead here). For some reason Ben felt the need to explain in detail every movie he watched on the plane, and he had watched as many as he could in the 11 hour ride.
….. Ok so Tam’s fallen asleep so i’m taking over… now this shit is about to get real funny…. maybe
So i did NOT feel obliged to describe every movie in detail i simply made my personal recommendations for films to watch (or not to watch as the case may be) to the taxi driver.. and if my memory serves me, he did ask first.
I will say this, for 90 minutes of my life when i was sat in a chair unable to move or do anything productive, the Beaver did indeed entertain, and i can say with confidence that Mel Gibson’s south london accent was of the same quality as the airline tomato juice cups… Watch the Beaver and then you tell me how good you think the bloody tomato juice cups were.

So the taxi driver who took us to Tammy’s house was a really nice guy, and gave us lots of hints and tips about nightlife, cool places to go and his favorite parts of South Africa. After meeting more of Tammy’s family and venturing out in to the local town for a bite to eat we’re feeling sufficiently tired and ready for a good nights rest. Check out the gallery below, i had an amazing pot of Oxtail soup & Tamara finally got some baby back ribs of her own.
We’ve got a half day tour booked of Soweto tomorrow, so more to follow then,
Night all x.
