Planes, Trains & Automobiles: Planning the trip of a lifetime.
September 21, 2011
The decision to travel around the world for a year was an easy one (in theory). 4 years ago we met in America and ever since we have been dreaming of exploring more of the world together. After working hard and saving even harder we are at the final stages of planning our epic trip. Both of us have (very scarily) left our jobs and I’ve moved back home to save even more money (Dad needs a special thanks here).
All our spare time is currently spent in meetings with Claire at Sta (lovely lady but don’t chew her pens, she gets mad), sorting our visas, contacting friends (with benefits) abroad, booking flights and hostels, visiting mountain shops (because we really need that amazing tiny folding towel and trousers that zip into shorts) and packing and re packing far too early.
There have been ups (realizing that in a few short weeks we are actually going to be on a plane and it’s all real; we don’t have to get up at 6am unless it’s for something exciting; my tan is gonna be awesome) and downs (freaking out that we have left our jobs in a recession; have nowhere to live when we get back and asking “will we have enough money do this without a phone call to bank of mum and dad?!”).
Our original pipe dream included:
South Africa, Australia, Fiji, Usa, India, Thailand China, Japan, South America
Then we realised we weren’t millionaires (dammit!) so settled on South Africa, Australia, Fiji, Usa. Then we discovered the most amazing website for volunteering – Original volunteers.com which offers lots of projects around the world which meant we could afford to add South America back to our itinerary.
Our date of departure is 10th October and we are counting down the seconds……
